China Hunts Crash Plane's 'Black Box'

May 9, 2002

A full scale search is under way for the missing 'black box' flight recorder of the Chinese passenger jet which crashed on Tuesday killing all 112 people on board.

Search teams have received signals from the data recorder but the hull of the plane has not yet been located.

At a press conference Thursday, Chinese officials acknowledged that there is now little hope of finding survivors from the China Northern Airlines MD-82 which plunged into the sea while on a flight from Beijing to Dalian in the north-east of the country.

A massive search for the wreckage of the aircraft is being carried out, involving over 40 ships and 50 divers. Sophisticated sonar equipment and GPS positioning systems are being used in the hunt.
