CEO of Swiss resigns

The chief executive of the national airline, Swiss, has announced his resignation pending a legal inquiry.
Andr Dos said he had taken the decision because the Federal Prosecutor's Office was planning to open an investigation against him over the crash of a plane owned by the now defunct regional carrier, Crossair in 2001.
Dos, who has been in charge of Swiss since its launch two years ago, said he was acting in the interest of his staff.
However, he rejected accusations that lax security measures at Crossair led to the plane crash near Zurich, which killed 24 people.

The shock announcement comes less than two weeks before the airline is due to announce its full-year results.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the carriers board said chairman Pieter Bouw would take over Dos's responsibilities on an interim basis with immediate effect.

The board thanked Dos for his efforts in building the airline, formed from the rump of Swissair, which collapsed in late 2001.

Andr Dos led Swiss through the most turbulent times, and he managed - despite difficult overall conditions - to initiate a turnaround, the airline said in a statement.

Swiss newspapers are questioning swiss CEO's resignation:

Press raises questions about Dos resignation

swissinfo March 11, 2004 9:53 AM

Dos's resignation dominated the Swiss media (swissinfo)
Swiss newspapers said on Thursday the resignation of Andr Dos, chief executive of the airline Swiss, was inevitable but begged a number of questions.

Dos resigned over an investigation into a Crossair plane crash three years ago, which killed 24 people. He was in charge of the airline at the time.

The Tribune de Genve commented that Doss resignation had not come as a surprise.

The head of Swiss had been living under permanent pressure and the recent decision by the federal prosecutor to open criminal proceedings against the former bosses of Crossair in the Bassersdorf crash affair tipped the balance.

The Berner Zeitung echoed the thoughts of the Geneva newspaper.

Dos was also responsible in his capacity as the head of Crossair. And therefore he had become a heavy burden. An airline boss who is linked to insufficient security cannot be tolerated because security and trust are the be all and end all of an airline, it stated.

Out of his depth

The Berner Zeitung added that there could be another reason for Doss resignation. There was much to suggest, it commented, that the board of directors wanted to be rid of him.

It was evident that Dos was out of his depth. Added to that, he had lost the trust of the banks and the politicians.

The Prosecutors Office announced on Friday that it was widening its probe into the fatal crash of a Crossair jet near Zurich airport in November 2001.

It opened a criminal investigation last month into possible negligent homicide and grievous bodily harm by negligence.

Dos was in charge of the former regional carrier, Crossair, at the time of the crash. Two other senior Crossair executives have also been named as part of the judicial inquiry.

Andr Dos rose rapidly through the ranks of Crossair and later became CEO of Swiss one of the most visible and difficult jobs in Switzerland.

His resignation marks the end of an era at Switzerlands embattled national airline.
Dos was born in 1957 in Bolligen, near the Swiss capital, Bern. As a child he was fascinated by flying and gained his private pilots licence at the age of 17.

After a spell in the Biel Verkehrsschule, a college specialising in transport, Dos worked on the ground staff for the then national airline, Swissair.
