Tape of crew's last words in doomed jet won't be released Broadcast News Thursday, October 21, 2004 The transcript of a final conversation between an air traffic controller and the pilot of a 747 cargo jet that crashed in Halifax last week won't be released to the public. John Cottreau, a spokesman for the Transportation Safety Board of Canada says they aren't for public consumption. Transcripts were released in 1998 shortly after the crash of Swissair Flight 111 off Nova Scotia, but Cottreau says that was "inadvertent." Louis Garneau, a spokesman for Nav Canada, the private-sector agency that operates air traffic control in Canada, says any rebroadcasting of the conversations would be a breach of a federal law. In addition, Nav Canada argues the privacy of its employees would be violated by the release of the tapes. The issue about the release of transcripts in four other cases will go before the Federal Court of Canada in January. http://www.canada.com/fortstjohn/story.html?id=b4e43b6a-8126-4e95-8271-35f1813c8226 | |||
