Recommendations and advisories from the Transportation Safety Board.

Dec. 22, 1998 - Board issues safety advisory for close inspection of MD-11 wiring.

March 9, 1999 - Recommends changes to flight data and voice recorders after investigators determine six minutes of data are missing from the Flight 111 recorders: that recorders operate on independent power supplies and have battery backup, and that voice recorders have longer recording duration.

Aug. 11, 1999 - Recommends against using insulation blankets similar to those used aboard Flight 111, and strongly recommends tougher flammability tests for insulation material.

March 3, 2000 - Advisory for checks of cockpit maplights after heat damage to insulation blankets is detected in other MD-11 aircraft.

Dec. 4, 2000 - Recommends crews land planes immediately if a suspicious odour or smoke is detected.

Aug. 28, 2001 - Board calls for tough new standards for testing wires, improved flammability testing for all material used in aircraft construction and a fail-safe philosophy for the manufacture of aircraft components. Some components, such as air conditioning systems, may actually aggravate a fire because their design may spread smoke rather than contain it, and allow air to feed the fire.
