PENGHU, Taiwan - U.S. investigators on Tuesday joined the probe of a China Airlines jet that broke up over the Taiwan Strait and killed 225 passengers and crew_ an accident much like a TWA crash in 1996 and a Swissair accident in 1998, an official said.

The members of the American team, who assisted in the TWA and Swissair probes, were chosen because "the cases were very similar," said David Lee, the lead investigator for Taiwan's Aviation Safety Council.

Investigators have declined to speculate why the China Airlines jet broke into four pieces 9,000 meters (30,000 feet) over the strait about 20 minutes after leaving Taipei for Hong Kong on Saturday. Theories include a fuel tank explosion or structural problems with the 22-year-old aircraft.

The pilots reported no problems before the Boeing 747-200 went down near the Penghu islands, off Taiwan's western coast and about 300 kilometers (180 miles) from Taipei.

Search teams have not recovered major chunks of wreckage or the plane's "black boxes," as the voice and flight data recorders are called
