Belgium sues Swissair for EUR 1bn

BRUSSELS - The Belgian state is to renew an EUR 1 billion lawsuit against defunct Swiss airline Swissair for its role in the collapse of Belgian national carrier Sabena, it was reported on Thursday.

Flemish daily 'De Tijd' said the Belgian authorities would appeal against a recent decision by the commercial court in Brussels, which said the government could not claim damages from Swissair.

Belgium argues that Swissair failed to respect a contractual agreement to inject funds into Sabena.

Swissair was a major shareholder in the Belgian carrier, and its own financial collapse led directly to Sabena's demise.

Lawyers handling Swissair's affairs said on Thursday that they had not yet decided how they would proceed in the light of the Belgian announcement.
